Default 88 starting issue

88 F150, 5.0, 4x4, Automatic

Here is my issue. Cold starting it fires right up, but when starting after the engine has been running for a while it slugs like low voltage. After sitting all night the battery still reads 12.7 V. After running for a while, shutting off and trying to start it slugs but voltage is still 12.8V. Checked at Solenoid and same voltage, checked while running and 14.7-14.8V. New starter solenoid as well. Any ideas?

so slugs meaning gasping for gas or . . . . . doesnt sound like voltage sounds like posibley the auto choke is stuck ! but just throwing it out there could be right or could be 100% wrong

No it acts like its starving for voltage, not fuel. Talked to a buddy and his theory is the starter may be on it's last leg. In his theory, the starter which has no heat shield is next to the exhaust system. When starting cold all is well, but after the starter gets hot from the exhaust, the windings are all screwed up and thats why it doesn't want to start.

Does sound like starter is dragging when hot. Check the cables for excessive heat during this occurance. Don't forget the negative cables. Be careful when buying rebuilt or gypo starters. Headaches! I prefer using the dealership for electrical parts.

The area I live in is remote, the starter will be either Federated Auto, or Napa, those are my options lol

Have never heard of Federated Auto, I moved from Arlington Heights to the west coast back in 1977. NAPA would then be my choice because of their Nationwide warranty.
