Default 88 F150 Problems

1. W/W still wont work right. I have intermintted wipers. Repalced the switch. Still only goes super fast.
2. Manual Tranny- Shifter is loose. Cannot find any rebuild kits to fix it.
3. Radio makes a buzzing noise. I am going to replace it but, just wanna know what it is.
4. Rear end bounces alot. The guy I bought it from says leaf springs. I look at them and they looked fine. He has some shocks off a 5 ton military truck on it. I wanna replace the leaf springs, springs, and shocks. Where can I find new rear springs for it.
5. Steering wheel seems to have alot of play in it.

That is all I can think of. I need a new bed on it, but I think I am going to put a flatbed on it unless anyone close to Kansas has a Long bed with duel tanks.

Wipers need a new governor. It's a black box mounted behind the same dash panel where the switch is. There is a recent thread explaining how to repair one, or buy a brand new one - a used one will probably give the same problems.

Not sure about the tranny - we have a lot of experts here who can help, though.

There should be a resistor (or some sort of gadget like that) mounted near the ignition coil. It's a silver tube about 2" long and 1/2" thick with one wire going to it off the pigtail that leads to your secondary coil wiring. That's probably either missing or worn out - a new one should fix the radio hum.

1/2 ton truck with 5 ton shocks... could be an issue. 5 ton trucks ride like a lumber wagon by design. If the leafs look good, a set of correct shocks should smooth out the ride. Cheap and easy fix.

Does the truck drive straight when you let go of the steering wheel? These trucks go through ball joints like crazy - that could cause sloppy steering, but will make the truck hard to keep in a straight line if they get really bad. You could also check the steering linkage - could be a worn u-joint or some other steering component worn out. Best bet would be to have a buddy turn the wheel while you watch for where the slop occurs.

Awesome. Thanks. I work for Firestone so I have had the truck up in the air alot. The front end looks great. It drives straight as an arrow. The truck has 286,000. Still runs great. I figure with that many miles I will go ahead, and update the rear as much as I can. Never know I may get another 200,000 out of the truck. I am going to tear into the front end soon. I have to replace the Exhaust manifolds, and the alternator first.
