Default 87 Lightning Build?

Hey guys. My first post, with more to come I'm sure. I've got an 87 ford with a 302 that pushin about 210hp right now with exhaust and intake mods. But from what I understand I think I can bore the block to a 351 and get heads and intake and turn it into a 1st generation lightning engine, but thats only 250hp to the wheels and I'd like 300. I would I be able to push more power out of it? or go a diffenert way?

The 302 is a totally different block than a 351.

They are but from what I remember thedeck height is different between the two I believe. Also it would cost way to much money to machine a 302 block into a 351 when you can but a longblock for next to nothing at any pick and pull.

It's not like a Chevy 305 and 350, which have the same external dimensions. 302 and 351 are different.

You wont make a 302 into a 351.. 347 stroker is about the best from a 302. Or you could get a 351 and make it a 408 stroker.

347 Stroker will definitely put you well over 300hp if your wallet can handle the hit. Figure on about 7500 total for a really well built, component matched engine that will hold together long enough for you to enjoy it. Sounds like a lot but if you look at how much go fast parts cost it really isn't! Decent heads will set you back 1500 then there's the cam, intake, injectors, engine management sensors, ignition, headers, port/polish, 4 bolt block, forged internals....it adds up quickly.

My 347 puts out almost 500 hp with 6lbs boost in my mustang.MPG is ridiculous,though...10 hwy in 6th Gear with 4.30's in the rear! A 347 can put out well over that w/o boost provided the components are well researched and the engine builder knows what he is doing!

Personally, I would not build another 347 as the rod angle is just too extreme for longevity. It's all a matter of taste...If I were you I would do as posted above and grab a 351 from a salvage yard and rebuild it myself. You can drop a few grand in it and be well over 300 hp and it will be reliable for years to come. The best thing about building smallblock engines is that all of the research has been done for us 100 times over! You can get by with a small budget if you really research it.Have the stock iron heads worked over by a competent head guy and you will be amazed at how much power you can get out of it! Get the intake matched to the head ports, make sure the cam is correct for your gearing,etc..A 351 built for a
Mustang will be a turd in a 4000lb truck! Do the research before youbuy anything!.A 351W is a great truck engine. It will be thirsty, though!

THank you very much, You seem very knowledgable. But I didnt know your cam had to "match" your gears. I thought you had truck cams for low end power and torque, and cars cams, for the opposite
