Default 87 f150 issues

I'm trying to get this thing running good again, it hasn't had any issues starting up at all, it takes a second to get the starter rolling but it fires right up.

It's got a 300 6 cyl engine, 4 speed, dual tanks.

What happens is while it's idling the RPM's jump and sometimes it will stall. Sometimes it will sit and idle great for 10 minutes straight, then out of nowhere it will start missing and stall. Opening the throttle doesn't help, and it doesn't want to rev up while it's missing.

There was some work done, but it didn't fix this issue. There's a new center tank, the rear tank has obviously been removed and supposedly both tanks have new in tank fuel pumps. The selector valve looks fresh (not 20+ years of grime on it) and the fuel filter is new. The external pump is still in a shell of rusty metal and looks like it hasn't been replaced, ever.

The external fuel pump is loud and whines constantly while running. It kicks on and you can hear it prime like it should.

I was thinking it was something to do with the spark, since it doesn't have any problem with starting... maybe a weak coil, so I put a new one on it, and it's still doing the same thing. The plugs and wires look like they're new and supposedly don't have more than a couple hundred miles on them.

When I first got it running, it did great. I had it out driving around for an hour before this started happening. It ran up to 55 with no problems until I was almost home. It was missing, stalled and the rear tires locked up and screeched, then fired back up on its own and kept going. That happened back to back about 3 or 4 times in a row.

Anyway, I'm just looking for thoughts..I'm going to order a new external fuel pump from rockauto tomorrow or friday, but is there anything else I should be looking at or a better way to diagnose the problem before I throw more money at it? I'm not real familiar with these trucks, it could be a flux capacitor or something this truck has that I don't know about. I saw an online diagram of a fusible link and I know those old things are the source of alot of problems but I can't find it to replace it.

The frame pump is noisy if it's dying or not getting enough fuel. If a tank was deleted then you need a single functon reservoir as the dual can stick and choke off the supply of fuel.

They're both on the truck, and the external pump whines like crazy. I've got a new one on the way from rockauto, so hopefully that will fix it. The truck has been sitting on pavement for the last couple years, and there's very little rust on it, the bed itself even looks like it's in good shape!! The only cosmetic damage is where the bedside was backed up into something...and my cousin ripped off the f150 decals on the fenders...not really a big deal it gives it charachter.
