Its ok to leave them unlocked and shift the transfercase into 4hi or 4lo at slow speeds . Its actually a very good option when on a hard surface where your 4x4 will bind such as pavement if you need your low range but not 4wd! Giving you 2Lo.

When I had my 92 5.0 5 speed 4x4 there was a spot at work where I had to back my trailer up a steep paved ramp. So instead of smoking my clutch I just put it in 4lo without the hubs locked (2Lo) and backed up it easily.
