Default 4X4 Not Working

I have had this truck for 5 years and have only used the 4x4 once to pull my neighbors tractor out of the mud. Tried to use the other day and no such luck. There are two buttons to push, low and high and neither work. Where do I start? I've got the Haynes but it doesn't offer much help.

Yup. Just checked those. I checked the ones in the cab. I also here a click coming from the kick panel on the drivers side when i push either 4x4 button. Not sure what that noise is.

Start with just the 4x4 button, but you have to be rolling for it to work. If you roll backwards, the hubs will disengage for ten feet then reengage in reverse. For the low setting you must already be in 4x4, stop completely, and put the truck in neutral. But you probably knew all that.
They dont work as in, no lights and no clunking? Or all 4 wheels aren't pulling?

Maybe the shift solenoid on the transfer case isn't responding?

OK. Should there be any stored codes?

and you've rolled forward for quite a while to make sure the hubs would engage? If so, I'd be pointing fingers at the transfer case. I dont believe our trucks store codes about 4x4... Scan it anyways, or check a code listing to see if it has any on 4x4. Maybe someone else here can chime in who's had this problem

Check the electrical connection at the transfer case shift motor, clean both the male and the female sides and be sure to put a liberal coat of di-electric grease on both befor reconnecting. I've got a 2000 Ranger that was doing the same thing you describe, and that is how I fixed it.

On a 89 Bronco, the shift motor itself was bad and I had to replace it.
