Default 4x4 Conversion questions

Hey everyone few questions here. I have a 1994 f150 300 2wd with what i believe is the E40D transmission, and i found a 1991 4x4 302 with a automatic transmission and thats all i know.

The questions:

1) I heard the transmissions are interchangeable on these trucks but i would rather keep mine as i know the history. I thought i read that the 4x4 tail shaft would fit in my transmission as long as there the same correct?

2) If there not the same will the other transmission still work with my truck?

3) It has auto locking hubs, do they work well?

Sorry about all the questions, this will be a learning project for me if it will work.

I'm going to throw this in just to give a heads up. I found multiple trucks all through 87-96 for sale that had the 4.9, auto trans, and 4x4. So they DO exist. I am interested as well on where to find an odd parts truck that has the strange combo.

Well i would rather keep my truck since i just did a bunch of body work and repainted it so i thought this conversion would work nice, and the other truck is only $500 so i think it would be a cool project.

Yes you can put a 4x4 tailshaft in the 2wd tranny, but it requires complete disassembly of the transmission. Might as well rebuild it if you're doing that and if you don't rebuild transmissions then good luck with that. The transmission is most likely different from yours but you can make it work. How hard that will be depends on which transmission it is.

So sounds like switching tailshafts is proabably out of the question, best way of figuring out what transmission it has is to look at the pan?

http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/fd/full.aspx?Page=9
take notice how two pans have 14 bolts but one pan is much larger than the other.
also if your parts truck has the 4r70w i would rebuild it and upgrade it while its out.
and on that note this would be a good read
http://www.tccoa.com/articles/tranny...on/index.shtml
i know its a site for cars but they cover the 4r70w in general and even mention its uses in trucks. so its worth at least a read.

what i am wondering is what condition is the parts truck in? does it run? is the frame good? is there a title? are the options the same as in same size cab and bed as yours?
what i am getting at is if its just a rusty body and yours is good you could just swap the bodies. not positive but that might be easier.

The owner finally emailed me back the trans code and its E, same as mine. So are the codes the same between the years?
