4x4 Conversion
Would it be feasible to convert a 95 F-150 i6 4.9 5 speed into a 4wd? I don't have that much experience beyond regular maintence but I'd be willing to get the parts at some point. I just don't know the exact ones needed to overhaul. I know the i6 has a higher bottom end torque, thats why I wanted it 4wd for occasional offroading. Unless there is something I can do to make the 2wd better offroading.
yes supper expensive your best bet find a 4x4 chassis and but your truck on that chassis cause otherwise you will have to drill out your shock mounts for the dual set up and use screws to hold them in then you eithe go with indepent front with the dual shocks or go 4x4 with the f250 set up with front leafs
your going to need a front axle with all the proper set up includeng the spindles then your going to need the 2 driveshafts, a transfer case for that trans, proper ratios or they will be out of wack getting all these parts will cost you a truck trust me i wanted to do the same thing but instead im convering into a f350 with the duall calipers and the 10.25 posi 4.10 f35 rear
i would try and locate a parts truck cheap that is a 4x4 try and get the complete rolling chassis and just build your truck from there or just use the parts you need
good luck and enjoy

87 forgot about having to either rebuild or replace the tranny with a short shaft four by tranny, these are different due to length and tail housings. They are designed to mount directly on the transfer via a short coupling. I believer the tail shaft is a different spine than that of a driveline.
I think Ill be on teh lookout for a f250 4x4 for my i6, would the i6 handle a 250 alright? No hurry, just will keep my eyes open for one, thanks! I see what you mean about the shocks, that would be a pain since it jus got new shocks before I got it and I'd rather not fool with a chassis alteration.

The diesel engines are either the 6.9 or the 7.3. Common problems with the 6.9 is stretching head bolts creating head gasket problems. Common problems with the 7.3 are cavitation, and dropping valves. IH updated the oil seals on the 7.3 eliminating the oil passing the valve seals and that caused a problem with the valve stem wearing out. Cavitation is caused by the running of the engine creating small bubbles in the water jacket, when these bubbles burst the water then impacts the cylinder walls creating after time small holes into the cylinder. Replacing the valve seals with the new ones will help them last, and using a SCA, supplemental cooling additive, will eliminate the cavitation problems. Problems common to both engines are the rollers on the lifters seizing and creatine misses due to poor valve opertation.
The I6 will work for a 250 if you do not plan on getting in a hurry, the diesel engines are in the same boat.
