Ford racing built some fantastic 429/460s. They've taken some of their 351 Boss Blocks and have built crate engines with 575 hp for openers (I have a 351 Cleveland in a 1966 Ford and it pulls the front wheels of the ground without breathing hard).

Alternatively, you can start with the basics -- go with an Eliminator Ultra Block which can be built up to 2000 h.p. Four bolt mains, bore 4.65 or higher. These typically set you back ~$2500-$3000.

My F-350 460 build is on its way to 600 plus hp.

Yeah I've heard it's possible, just more expensive and more of a pain

That thing has Hellman's Mayonaise jars for pistons so good mpg is a pipe dream!

My buddy has a f350 dually club cab with one and he gets no more than 8 mpg empty on the hwy with 4.10's. It's a 3 ton vehicle so it sucks fuel to get it moving...

I towed that monster home from Miami a few years ago when the transmission went out with my 90 1/2 ton with a towbar. AAA wouldn't tow him because it was over their limit and the cheapest tow rate we could find was 450 bucks! I had no issues but Florida is flat and I have an F250 suspension all the way around so it was relatively safe. Braking was not confidence inspiring though...lol. I would not have attempted that in a real State with terrain like Virginia or Kentucky.
If you're gonna go with an automatic get it built as heavy duty as you can afford to as the sheer weight of an F350 will kill a stock one pretty quickly. He went to Suncoast and dropped 4500 on a new one with O/D but it's built to the hilt and will actually burn the *** end off it now....lol.
I'll definitely be changing the heads, to what I'm not sure. I don't know anything about the standalone efi system, I'll be looking to spend around 5k. And I'm aware I won't get anything for mpg lol it is a 460 after all.

And would you believe I actually live in virginia? It's not too bad here in richmond. Out in the western part of the state, it's pretty mountainous, that's for sure.

I'd really like to get the zf5, but they seem pretty difficult to find with a 460. They seem to be in every diesel truck though lol.

Just toss a Viper spec T66 6speed in it with a kevlar clutch and proceed to drive it like I drive my 347 Foxbody! lol There is very little in life as rewarding as having 500lbs of torque and 3 pedals to play with....

Why don't you buy an auto go to the junkyard pick up everything need for a ZF5 swap (slave, pedal assembly, transmission, driveshaft from same wheel base truck (might have to have one custom made) then call it good. Diesels and 460s have the same bolt pattern for 460s. Also while you have it out you could build it to have your power. I love the Zf5 so to me it would be worth it (maybe not to you).
If you can't, the C6 is a great builder transmission the C6 is what is used in race cars a lot of times.
My buddy has a 77 F150 with 460 dropped in it carbed running about 375+ HP and 420+ ft lbs TQ (with mininmal upgrades) and that thing flies down the road with his C6 built. By the way it is pushing 44s on near 4.10s LOL. (He hasn't regeared yet.)
Only upgrades I think he has is an Eldebrock 650 CFM carb, new intake manifold, high perforamance water pump, shift kit in transmission, bored .030 over, K&N intake, true dual pipes out the back with glass packs and no cats (that thing was to loud straight piped), headers, D3ve heads and that's it as I know of. He still is going to build it farther just ran out of money doing it thanks to him having 4 460s (1 race car, one in a stang, one in the truck above and a 90 F350 4x4).

My truck has a billet custom cam, roller lifters and rockers, hardened pushrods, triple racing valve springs, longtube headers, high flow cats, 3 inch dual exhaust! Stock injectors, stock everything computer wise! I am still needing a tune...
Ill prolly get an extra 50 hp!
The only problem that i have is when i am trying to play in the mud in 4x4 the clutch slips like a ****! Im going to put a centerforce dual friction clutch in it! It ran the best when i first got my engine put in it, it would roast 33s through second gear!
Not too shabby!!! Also you will need some traction bars of some sort cause the wheel hopping will send your teeth into your brain lol

i want to just throw this out there, 460s and diesels dont have the same bolt pattern, atleast in the 92+ body style. the bell housings are the same, but bolt patterns are different.

im not very familiar with the 6.9 diesels though.
