This is 16 years earlier, but the 4.9 in my father's 1980 F150 had 270K miles on the motor when the head gasket finally started leaking. It did not burn a drop of oil, never had the head off, and still was running the original water pump it had on it when he bought it in 1986 with 100k already on the clock.

My uncle always claimed Ford stopped making this motor because it was built too good = people could not wear them out...

I ran my 4.9 overheating for at least 10 miles, gauge pegged over the hot side. Ran it until it stalled, popped the clutch and continued. Kept going for 5 or so miles popping the clutch everytime it stalled until it wouldn't run anymore. Pulled it home, replaced the melted starter and the thing started right up. I don't have that engine anymore.
