well if you think its a good deal, then by all means, go ahead and buy it. Its always nice to see a truck given to someone who will take care of it and make it last, rather than a crazy redneck who will kill it in a few years.

How can you judge if it is a newer engine or not from the picture? If it is getting transplanted into a bricknose I imagine they would have kept all of the original wiring and accessory brackets/intake, etc from the 89.
Not trying to be a smartass just genuinely curious. Don't know much about 4.9's either.

I'd start by looking at block casting numbers - if it starts with an F you can be sure it was made in the 90's.

I pointed it out because most people swap the complete engine, and just deal with the mismatched wiring; and that's certainly not a complete '96 engine. It's rare for someone to swap in a used engine & also know enough to swap all the year-specific parts so it still works like the original; which is what might have happened here. But the OP didn't specify which route was taken, so it's possible the seller was just blowing smoke.
Post more pics of the engine; particularly the harmonic balancer, which is unique on a '96, and not necessary to change when installing the engine in an older truck.

So the story is, it basically just has the 96 motor, the guy just dropped in an 89 computer into it today. The intake and sensors and everything like that are still from the 89

The HB is certainly from a '96 4.9L, and it doesn't look like its bolt has been out, so it's probably a used '96 long block with all the original '89 parts bolted on.

well that is basically exactly what he told me, only thing wrong with it is some rust on the fenders and a bent up tailgate, but ill most likely replace it and end up painting it. The only thing im concerned about it the millage, cause i dont really think he has any way of proving the 96 motor has 100k on it, but hes been honest and a really good seller so it most likely dose, and who knows for sure how much is on everything else with the od only having 5 digits.
