Default Truck dying out while driving.

I got a 89 f150 4x4 with a 4.9 straight 6. Lately while i am driving it has been sputtering and eventually dies out. sometimes if i press the gas pedal a couple of times i can keep it goin sometimes it dies anyways. I really dont know where to begin with figuring out what the problem is as i dont have any mechanical people around, so i am learning as i go. So any help would be greatly appreciated as it has starting to do it more and more each day.

Default fuel issues

First place I would start is the fuel filter 9 out of 10 times this is the issue! If that doesnt fix it then its probably your fuel pump or a bad ground wire.

also check your mass air flow sensor if your truck is equipped with one

is there only one fuel filter? i have dual tanks if that matters. and does it only have one fuel pump or two and do u know where they may be located. Also how would i know if it is equipped with a mass air flow sensor?

yeah single fuel filter still, i think there is dual pumps, and the mass air flow sensor will be on the intake tube right next to the stock air box and there should be 4 wires coming out of a connector that would be plugged into the intake hose, if yours doesnt have that than you dont have a mass air flow sensor

Does it start up ok after 20-30 minutes & seem to run ok until it happens again? On my 89 Bronco it did that & it was the TFI module overheating! I eventually remounted it on the firewall instead of on the block & it was ok. I don't know if the 6's are the same or not but keep it in mind!

What is the TFI Module and what exactly does it do? Yes the truck will run fine until it starts to warm up. then it does the sputtering and dying out. it hasnt done it to me on the interstate yet but around town and especially coming up to lights it has been doing it.

Have the codes read, might lead you in the right direction. Am not sure if you are EEC IV or OBD II, either way, should post a code.
