Default engine swap

I have a 92 f150 XLT 4wd with a 351W engine with a blown head gasket , my question is, is it possible to fit a later model OHC engine that will fit the E40D transmission, or will i have to change the transmission too? I don't know which OHC engines would fit and whether it is really worth the cost and hassle. Truck is rust free as it was in Nevada and Calif. till two years ago and then i moved to NC. Maybe i should just freshen up the engine and live with 10 mpg as i probably won't drive any more than 3,000 miles per year as i have 3 cars and a truck and am retired.
