Bigger alternator?
Hey guys!
I just recently had installed some Hella 550F's and I notice that when on the Voltage drops. I'm thinking i need a bigger alternator. I have the stock 60 amp and I don't think that cuts it.
Thoughts?
P.S I also have it when I'm at a light the voltage will drop down with nothing on.

Let's say your alternator is performing correctly and putting out 13.8v. 2 55w hellas, 2 55w low beam headlights, say another 100w for the marker lights and license plate lights = 23.18 amps drawing from your 60a alternator. Not counting the amps the ignition system is drawing (I honestly have no idea), your probably drawing half of the rated amperage. Throw in any stereo amps or other dc accessories, and you could be pulling more than half of the rated amps. I would think about the 3g 130amp and maybe the health of your battery. It sucks, but I 've got to go to Wally World tomorrow and dump a bill on a new battery.

I like the idea of the 3g but I don't really know it. Thoughts?
Well, there were two facotry alternators for the '93 5.0. A 75a and a 95a.
My thoughts are, a stock 95a side mount runs $100 - $260 from Oreilly Auto Parts. I'm a cheap S.O.B. I'd buy the $99 one or go to the salvage yard and check these vehicles that had the 130a option. These will be plug and play with no wiring harness mods needed.
93-96 V8 Econoline with Air Conditioning or the High Output Alternator options
97-03 V6 Econoline E-Series or F-150
95-01 4.0 V6 Explorer or Ranger

Yes. Plain and simple. Why wouldn't you want to do such a simple and cheap upgrade? If you plan on doing anything that's going to add to your electrical load why wouldn't you want more power available?
