Remove the shifter ****. I'm not sure how yours might come off. On my '88 with a 5 speed the **** just slips right off, not right I know.

I assume you're talking about the Mazda M5OD-R2, but you should put ALL your truck's details into your signature as this caption explains:

No, the **** does not need to come off. Clean the dirt out of the 4 screw wells in the plastic bezel on the floor (it's a LOT harder than it sounds), and lift it with the boot. Then remove the nut from the shifter base, install it on the other side, and tighten until it loosens (seriously).

Have you found a replacement boot yet? I've never seen them for sale. And I haven't actually removed one from a shifter yet - it doesn't look easy. Putting one back on looks even harder.

Here is a replacement boot. I bought one recently and it looks just like the worn out junkyard piece that came with the M5OD-R2, except new.

I got my boot from LMC or NPD and I removed the four screws and lifted the boot and removed the entire shifter. From there I removed the gear shift **** (mine is after market with a set screw) and then I pulled the new boot over the shifter from the top and it will get tight as it get further down. I used some silicone lube to make it easier to slide over the final midshaft and into the groove. I am very happy with the new boot. You could do it without removing the shifter lever (just cut the old one off and slide the new one from the top like I described above.

The style in my pic above will not go on from the top. I've only seen 4-sp shifters that go on that way.

Steve,
The M5OD shifter is what I have and it does slide over the top with the shifter **** removed. It is tight as it get further down the shaft (which is why I used a silicone lubricant) but it does go on using the steps I listed. I was concerned about it tearing where the lip of the rubber slides into the groove but I had no issues and it slipped over and into the notch with no issues. The great part about using the silicone spray lubricant is that it is good for the rubber.
I may have got mine off Amazon like listed above (because mine looks exactly like the link photo), I would have to dig out my receipts to verify though.

Just an update for the next guy that searches.

The boot i linked to above has been installed since the post was made. It installed easily from the top. I have a Core/Hurst shifter so took the stick off. Just took a few minutes to slide the boot down with a little bit of Dawn dish detergent on it.
