How much paint?
I am going to be painting a truck pretty soon, so I just want to know about how many gallons of paint (im using single stage) and primer I will need. Its a single cab long bed, The new paint is close enough to the old paint that I wont worry about the door jambs and the engine bay. I also wont bother painting the inside of the bed. So just the exterior of the truck.
If you're painting over old paint, you don't need primer. I used about a gallon of black to put 3 heavy coats on my Bronco.

You'll need a gallon minimum, probably closer to a gallon and a quart for 3-4 solid coats.
And prepare to be blown away by how much red paint costs - at least three times as much as white or black for good material.
Nowadays, I'd recommend going with a good single stage paint and then using a ceramic coating for protection. At this point, in my humble opinion, anyone trying to convince you to do clear coat is trying to sell you something.

Well, I used farm implement paint. And I park outdoors. And I use it to knock down trees & brush. And I only let God wash it for me. But this is about how it looks today:

But on the '93 EB Bronco I'm building, I'm going to pay a pro ~$6K to paint & polish it for me, and I'll keep that one waxed. But it'll still stay outdoors, and get used like it was designed for.

So far I have spent ~$700 on all of the parts needed to for my repairs, (The radiator and battery I got new, but the body parts, hvac box, Headlight assembly, and steering box all came from the junkyard. Finding a non rusted radiator core support was nearly impossible. It seems that my truck was the only one in the northern half of VA without rust.) The quote for the frame work after they inspected it is $600-800. But I wont actually know what it will cost until they are done, whenever that actually happens. So that leaves about $2k of the insurance money for paint and anything else I might end up needing. (the radius arm on the passenger side, and the sway bar frame cross member were bent, but the body shop told me that they should bend back when the frame straightens, so I shouldnt worry. And I have 90% trust in what he says. but that does not really leave me enough money for for a good professional job. So the paint will be done by me, I feel fine with my ability to paint it, but I am just worried about finding a place to paint where it will be protected from dust and debris.
I found original matching paint on amazon for almost $400 a gallon, but on summit racing they have another similar paint for only about $100 a gallon, I'm hoping that it isnt a very low quality paint, but I wont really mind if the paint gets a patina or peels away again. I also have heard that the color of the primer has a big effect on the look of the paint. The hood and fender came from a truck that was the same color as mine, but it was 2tone and has tan as the secondary color. But the door that I got is green, and the stone deflector is tan.
I have been getting pretty anxious about this job. the accident happened in last November and I have spent a total of 4 days working on the truck. One to remove the damaged parts, two to replace the body mounts, and another day to put all of the new parts on. It took about three months just to find the body panels I needed, and the truck has been at the body shop for the past four months. But unfortunately, that's what usually happens when you go to a body shop privately, insurance jobs are always given priority.
