yet another hard shift thread
96 Ford with the 5.8 and E40D trans.
I've read about 20 threads here and many more across the interwebs. I have amazon bringing me some Lucas to try, i'm a fan of 'maybe ten bucks will fix it' kinda things, like seafoam.
This is a VERY hard 1-2 shirt. I can feel the others shifting 'hard' (my first Ford in my 53 years of life) but the first one feels like someone tapped me at an intersection while I was stopped.
One thing I've not seen described in *any* other thread I've read is on mine, if I stick my foot into it a bit like maybe a third way in, it shifts perfectly normal. Every single time. If I don't I get the hard shift. Every single time. Normal take off, very very slow take off (like almost walking speed). Every single time. I'm not flooring it, but just maybe like getting into it a bit on a very short on-ramp to the highway.
Temp does not matter
OD on/off does not matter
Have pulled cables off battery many times in the few months I've had it
Does the getting into it a bit mean anything to anyone?

So the moral of the story is, get into it. Problem solved.
But seriously - E4OD's can be notoriously picky. When was the last time the fluid was changed? Is it Mercon V fluid? Was the torque converter fluid drained as well?

yeah if I still drove like I did in my 20's I'd not be worried about it. One thing I've not done is tow the boat yet.
and no have not changed (my 'guy' did a bunch of stuff to it to make road ready but pretty sure he didn't actually change the trans fluid) looks and smells fine and is full.

Just because something is cheap, that doesn't mean you should try it. It's cheap to pour stale coffee into the transmission - would you try that? And the fact that someone sells something doesn't mean it's good, effective, or even safe to use on a 24-year-old transmission.
The first thing I'd do is find a transmission professional (or 5) and get some firsthand opinions. Disconnecting the battery is not diagnosis. Neither is pressing the pedal. But if you want to do some real diagnosis yourself, click these & read their captions:
