The Mazda M5OD-R2 has an integral bellhousing, so a trans that fits a modular engine can't fit a smallblock. You have to get a pre-'97 trans. The last one I priced was US$500+core from High Gear here in Memphis (plus installation).

Thanks steve. I was hoping that there wasn't a re-cast of mentioned bell-housing/transmission casing after '96. I haven't ordered things online. I have reservations about doing so especially with bigger ticket items such as transmissions. I found this place online: http://www.smartpartsauto.com/manual...5r2_mazda.html and their prices seemed reasonable. However my question is what to do for warranty work should something go wrong with the trans. I'm in Alberta so it could get complicated trying to resolve any performance issues on a component where I can't just go to an actual physical location for assistance. Is it quite likely that the whole trans needs to be rebuilt at this point or is it possible that just the top end could be replaced. Shift rails, forks etc?

I'm over in SW Ontario, but I've got something here that might be useful. PM me if you're interested

So it always seems like everybody forgets about the t18 transmission. It’s a 4 speed manual with a really low granny gear. It came with a lot of those f-series trucks, like my ‘89 f150 with the 300. I personally like it a lot better than the Mazda 5 speed because that Mazda just seems to be a little bit under powered. While the four speed lets you get the most use out of your trucks torque.

I can't begin to diagnose your trans over the interwebz. If you're not sure what's wrong & what it needs, take it to a local pro for diagnosis. High Gear is a family-owned local business, so I'd trust them to ship a good trans, but I understand that they're not local to you, and you don't have that trust. I don't even know that they'd ship to Canadia, or that it would be cost-effective, but you could call them.

Last time I went there (the business is downtown Memphis), I picked up an NP435 shifter cap and a couple of their t-shirts (We've upped our standards - now, up yours!), so they might remember me. They live near me in Oakland.

The T-18 is weaker & has a higher 1st gear than the NP435; and it's not synchronized like the T19. A 5-sp OD will get more from the engine's torque than a 4sp. So the T18 would be a step down IMO.

I know this is a year and a half old, but if you can recall which 2 wires you splice? I have the red 8 pin MLPS sensor connector and a smaller round 4(?) pin connector on my cable from the bronco, and the standard 2 pin wire running from the trans for the reverse lights. I just finished installing my m5r2 (coming from an e4od) behind a 4bt and stopped for the day before buttoning things up completely. This information is surprisingly hard to find, especially since it seems people tend to run this swap pretty often.

For whomever believes this trans won't hold the power of a 4bt, please keep the flaming to yourselves. I've read too many threads for information that get hijacked by people that just want to argue about how much power the m5r2 will take.

Thank you for any and all assistance.

Black wire with pink stripe is the backup lamp circuit. Ground will be black.

BLDTruth, thank you for the really fast reply and linked graphic.

I take it that those 2 wires (57 [blk/pnk] and 140 [blk]) from the MLPS are the two that get spliced to the 2 wires coming from the trans cable. Should those wires from the trans be matching in color, or how would I go about figuring out which wire splices to which? I'm sorry I can do a lot with hand tools, but wiring is well above my skill set at the moment. Working on that...

Thanks again!

Typically, Ford has always used the same wire colors for the same function on every year of every vehicle model. So the reverse circuit will be the same colors. But you can look up your truck's wiring at this link:
http://www.bbbind.com/tsb-wiring-diagrams-database/

The ground wire is NOT part of the reverse wiring at the transmission. It's key-switched +12V going in, and reverse-switched +12V going out to the lights (and other circuits, depending on the options on the truck).

Steve83, I appreciate the link and info. Sadly, my machine here at work doesn't have something those webpages wants and they won't load up. I'll check it out once I get back to the house later. Hopefully it'll all make sense and won't look like latin.

On another note, my neighbor got a m5r2 put in behind his 351 and since there is no such pcm for that combo, he has to rev it up once it starts to keep the engine running if it's a little chilly outside. Any way around this? I only throw this in here because both of you two seem pretty dang knowledgeable about the wiring of these rigs.
