Default Trans leak

i have an automatic 1990 f150 with the 5.0. 114k original miles. it was my daily driver until i walked out one day to find it standing in a puddle of trans fluid. i checked the dip stick and it was bone dry, so it completely leaked out all of my fluid overnight. i havent tried to drive it since. the closest certified ford mechanic is 45 minutes away from me, so tough to find out what is wrong or where it would be leaking from without paying a tow bill. any ideas on where to start?

JB weld the **** out of the bottom or silicone the seal. Then drive it there. That way the mechanic can still get the gunk you put off easy and you will hopefully make it there in time. Needs to be high temp resistant and let it harden up overnight THEN put fluid in.

Feels good that I live right across ford and worked there for abit I have seen people in your situation though. Or if you're mechanically inclined just figure out which seal is dripping it out.

Check the trans cooler lines, good probability one of those chaffed/rusted thru. They run on the passenger side of the trans up to the radiator.

He said he wants to get to the dealership, I didn't give him a permanent fix or tell him to run with those, just merely get there or fix the seal himself depending where it's coming from.

No problem. You find the leak? Hopefully it's an easy fix for ya, sucks having a broke rig.

you could fill it up alittle to find the leak then drain and fix,if u cant fix it completely u could fill it up to where it should be and get tow strapped into town,(put the truck in nuetral on the tcase to isolate the trans, and put that in nuetral too,)it might be a pain but if its leaking fast u wont hurt nothing if nothing is spinning,or spinning fast at least

He said the nearest certified ford mechanic is 45 minutes away, not that he was trying to get there. If he doesn't know where the leak is the first thing he should do is find it not try to cover it up until he gets to a mechanic.

To OP, if the truck hasn't moved try to find the "center" or "start" of the puddle. Chances are if you find it you can just look up at whatever is above and find where the fluid is coming from. Just give her a quick inspection, get under there with a light if you have to. Look for drops of fluid forming on or around the pan of the transmission, the bell housing, and the output shaft where it connects to the drive shaft (2wd) or transfer case (4wd). After that, if you have a transmission oil cooler (not sure if that was standard or just tow package equipped trucks) check the lines that connect that to your transmission. Make sure you check the pan gasket really good. Take it off, clean it, and reseat it if you have too. If you do take the pan off make sure not to over tighten when you reinstall.

Also double check where the dipstick connects to your transmission. I had a bad engine oil leak when I first got my truck because the dipstick wasn't seated properly and the tube had a big hole in it
