Stalling when put in Park or Neutral
Hi, i have a 1988 F150 custom, 5.0 liter engine, runs all around good, just stalls when put in park or neutral, i have put new spark plugs, spark plug wires, a new distributor cap and a new air filter in, did help the overall running , but not the stalling, the timing is set at 10. any ideas what could be the problem ?
thanks

Suggest to check the idle air control (IAC) solenoid. It's about the size of a roll of quarters with an electric connection on one end and straddles the intake throttle butterfly. This era was prone to these fouling with gook. Typically can remove it and clean the plunger with carb cleaner so that it moves freely. Of course, given the age of these models, it is possible that the IAC has failed or is failing... If the fast idle doesn't work on a cold start, could be a failure rather than gunk. A usual sign of gunk is the idle speed swinging around sometimes to the point of stalling.
The base timing is 10BTDC with the SPOUT connector out. Some people will advance this a degree or two or more to compensate for estimated timing chain stretch on older engines.
