Preparing to drop transmission to replace torque converter.
I’ve watched several videos and I’m working up the courage to do it. Going to grab a transmission jack from harbor freight (on sale for $90 for itc members) and I’ll order the torque converter from rock auto for my 4r70w and a rear main seal and the torque converter seal.
Anything else I need/should do while I’ve got it down? I did a drain and fill and filter replace last summer for the trans. Also anyone know how many quarts of oil will I need about to refill when I replace the tc?
I don't have experience with automatic transmissions but as far as safety goes, make sure the truck is well supported and wheels are chocked/ parking brake set.

yep I have a flat garage 6ton stands a good jack chocks and a working parking brake so I’m good there. Just not sure if there’s anything else to do while I have it out.
Overhaul the transmission
Why are you replacing the torque converter?
When replacing the front converter seal, the smart money also pulls the front pump and replaces that gasket and O ring too
By then you are looking at some of the guts of the transmission, might as well go ahead and overhaul it

I already have no idea what I’m doing with most anything with my truck without a good video to follow, pulling the trans to replace the torque converter is intimidating enough.
Not sure how to describe it. I get a shaking when slowing down to a stop but not the entire time, only getting down to like 25mph and it stops before I get to a stop. Also shifting a little rough from 1st-3rd. I’ll see if I can get a video. Edit: no luck getting a video, can’t capture it. Maybe I’ll have my wife drive with me to get it.
I just had the tires rebalanced, did the front pads and rotors, front wheel bearings, front axle bearings, leaf springs, and driveshaft u joints, and last summer I did the trans drain and fill with filter change. I did have the issue before but now it feels like it’s a smaller faster shaking whereas before it was like a slower larger jerking to a stop. Shaking is in the whole truck not the brake pedal.

Okay
Check the rear pinion yoke for being loose on the rear axle first, just in case
The cardinal rule for trans R&R is "torque converter rattle"
That means to have the torque converter stay loose in there while you bolt up the trans case
And, when completely bolted up and you start the nuts or bolts for the torque converter, they rattle inside the bolt holes, verifying the front pump was not on a bind
Rest of it is cut and dries, follow the AllData procedure
That 4R70W is basically a AOD-E which is a bit smaller than the E4OD 4R100 trans where you have a better go of it removing the y pipe first
Yours will come out easier without messing with the exhaust
People get pissed and cut the y pipe to get the trans out

What am I looking for when I check the pinion? Shake it side to side/up down and see if it moves?
I’ve only ever seen videos where you fill a bit of trans fluid in the converter and stick it back on the spindle thing in the trans and twist and turn it while pushing to make sure it clicks/sets into place like three times. It’s supposed to bolt in? I watched it a while ago, I’ll have to watch some videos again.
I don’t have alldata.
Glad I don’t have to cut my exhaust.

I checked the rear pinion yoke, seems good. Do I have to remove the shaft to check it though?
I also see this leaking again, I replaced that seal last year and when I replaced that u joint I put some grease on the shaft and it’s still leaking. 🙃
Yes, you are looking for a possible loose rear axle pinion
Means yes, try to move it up and down
Your local library has AllData for free because they pay the subscription for you
Some of the aftermarket seals are junk
Try to find a Ford rear output seal for that transfer case, a Spicer seal from a Dana supplier is okay, it's the same style with the metal outer ring
Find a marriage gasket, you'll need one of those too
