I'm better versed on the 92 to 96 trannnys so not even sure which one you'd have in that.
One of the first things to consider would be fluid and filter; if the filter gets dirty pressure drops and it doesn't really snap into gear the way it should.
Pretty messy job though.
If you do take it in to be done, don't let them scare you with a bunch of black stuff in the pan, that's pretty normal.
