Question back again with another project

Well I'm back on the forum again. had a 82 a while back and ended up selling that. now i have a 95 bronco that i've had for a couple years and love and just last night i picked up a 92 f150 ext cab flare side 302/ e4od for my wife to drive. this one has a few issues i need fixed before she can use it. and hence the thread.

motor runs fine, but we have no forward gears. reverse works, but the idle drops low enough to kill the motor when in reverse. I looked under it last night and looks like the trans pan gasket is leaking all over and will need replaced. i checked the fluid level this morning and it was pretty low. i topped it off and ran through the gears, but no change. next step i guess is todrop the pan and check to see if the filter is clogged. i'm hoping it's not that the po drove it low for too long and burnt out the clutch on it. however I would think if that's the case then i wouldn't have reverse either.

anyone run into this and know of what would be more likely problems i'm having or easier things to check first before i ended up pulling the whole thing?

thanks in advance for the help!

Check for codes first.

good idea. it's not throwing a cel or any other lights on the dash. i'll have to find the write up again on how to check codes on the pre obd2 trucks.

well i pulled some codes and got a couple that look related.

654 mlps not in park position

452 computer detected error in vss or psom signal last 80 warm up cycles

i got under it tonight and looked at the mlps and noticed something odd. it's an 8 wire connector i believe and two of the wires were cut. a yellow/red and red/blue. the other part of it is that someone crimped those two wires together coming from the truck side and the plug side the are not connected to anything? anyone have a wiring diagram of the plug so i know what these are for and know what they go to or why someone would have done that?

Looks like they bypassed the neutral safety so it will start in any gear.

looks like there are leaks all over the trans and transfer case. just looked up pricing at a couple salvage yards and I think for $85 i'm gonna go grab one from there and see what i can do with it. my question is what vehicles will work. Does it need to be specifically from another 4x4 302? or will a 351 or 4.9 trans work? 2wd? diesel? bronco or E-series?
