Looks like I finally managed to break one of the rusty spring hangers on the rear of my truck. I know I'll need at least the hanger, thoughts on the shackle? Also would Dorman parts be fine to put on in this case? Thanks!

Just had to do this on both sides. I would recommend replacing the hanger and shackle at the least. You will be lucky if the bolt comes out of the spring bushing though so likely have to replace the bushing as well. I bough all my parts from parts geek online. Got EVERYTHING for less than $100 shipped to my door. That came with: Both rear spring bushings, shackles, hangers, bolts to replace hanger rivets, and bolts and nuts for shackles. Here is a link.

I did mine in 1 1\2 hrs tops, it helped that I have an engine hoist, hooked it up to the bumper, which raised the chassis off the springs. I used my grinder with about 4 cutoff wheels.

 

think I should go ahead and do the other side as well? it is rusted to a similar degree, but it is not broken yet. should I plan to go through multiple cutting discs on these rivets then?

 

A SHARP chisel will help, and since you arent trying to save the hangers, i would use a good grinding disk, or a quality cutting wheel like Walter zip cut, or the Norton brand ones, they cost more but last longer.

 

Should try undercoating your vehicle!

the truck is 18 yrs old... I've only owned it for about 3 of those years, and it's lived in OH all 18 as far as I know. needless to say, the rust came with the truck. I wish it was undercoated but when I got it for free I won't complain too much
