I just redid my brakes for the first time and I feel pretty good but at the same time I feel like something is wrong. I feel like the springs should be up going down on the anchor instead of under going up, but I could be exaggerating it. Does my breaks look right?
what do y’all think?
Looks okay to me.......However I would close up those 2 springs a little (over that center bolt stud) just to be sure) also tap the center of left side shoe towards the right side shoe to center the drum going on.......... slightly so the shoes will fit the drum........These are self adjusting brakes so you can adjust them wider so your brake drum just barely goes over the shoe.... very very slight drag is needed...... you will hear it drag but shouldn't really feel it drag.......better to be.an easy fit than have too much drag.......If they are too loose sometimes the adjuster will not work right ?? .....To self adjust rear brakes..... back up slowly & apply brakes till trk rear end rocks down-wood & completely stops....Do this 2-3 times....Your all set now !!...........Oh & did I say put some never seize around the hub lip that center's the drum to the hub & you shouldn't have it seize on next time you have to take it apart because i know you had a hard time taking the drum off ??...(am I right)

I usually use a pair of pliers to squeeze down and get a slightly snugger fit with the spring's hooks around the anchoring pin. Also if you place your palms at 9 and 3 oclock positions and can rock the whole assembly back and forth, everything is good.
The toughest part of the whole job is getting that bottom blue spring installed.
Not to me
The front shoe is not resting on the big post like the rear shoe is (at the top)
That means the brake cable is sticky and has not returned the lever to the off position (yours is still partially applied)
You can sometimes take a big pry bar in there to the lever and pry it back (relieve the pressure)
Then the drum will go oin without cocking the shoes to one side

I see I am having trouble getting that shoe to sit flush on that anchor pin! I will definitely have to give that a try Hopefully, I won’t have to disassemble the whole break to fix that parking lever because that could be very well what’s causing that!

You might find after once the shoes are adjusted to put the drum back on everything will be in place ??......I usually take a ball peen hammer & gently tap the center of each shoe sideways to kinda nudge everything to sit flush where it should.....Tap center of each shoe 2-3 times & you should see it sits better !! Just leave what looks like even spacing all around the backing plate to shoe surface & you are golden !!

With a big pry bar against the axle, you can pry the lever back with the shoes and springs in place
It tries to force the shoes back off and pop the springs, but it can be done and then you can just slap the shoes back in place
Just bought a 1998 F150 with V6/Auto and didnt know the e brake was on.
Passenger wheel locked up for a while due to all the heat.
Pulled the wheel off yesterday, but was surprised to see a drum back there. Pictures like this tell me
its the same exact rear drum design Chrysler used back in the 70's...had it on my Challenger.
Could not pull the drum off, so maybe a shoe was pressed in too much...we tried a torch on the front hub
of the drum where it meets the axle because they bind up together there but it wont budge even with a sledge.
Up in the air on the jack that wheel turns both directions no resistance in neutral, maybe after all the pounding and heat
the wheel cylinder unfroze? Parking brake cable actuates ok, not freezing. Drove it home from the shop and didnt hear any clunking noise back there
like it was when it fouled up...it would clunk as if the shoe grabbed the drum and you could feel a pull to the right.
Reverse was fine so I figure one shoe was stuck.
Repair guy said driving it like that was bad for the transmission, I dont see any fluid loss and I was surprised
with the parking brake down all the way the truck moved at all.
On the Chryslers, the adjuster is set every so many miles and the brake pedal comes up higher, so I guess its the same deal here?
