The mighty 300 six
#81
Well, I will add my story, its an older one but relevant. In 2003 I bought an 81 bronco with the 300. the truck had 280k on it when I bought it for 500 bucks. I drove it for 5-6 months filling it back up with oil whenever it would start knocking from low oil. It did leak a lot, but ran great and never failed me. I then decided to drive from Ellensburg, Wa over to Seattle to pick up a set of wheels and tires someone was giving away. on the way back, loaded down with the set of 33's in the back going up snoqualmie pass when there was a loud bang and a plume of steam from under the hood.
I pulled over, popped the hood and saw that, as I learned later upon tear down, that the #4 connecting rod had broken and the piston had impacted the head, cracking it and separating the head from the block over #3,#4 and #5. As I was a poor college student, I got back in and figured I could try and start it. It did start. It sounded like hell and had no power but it ran. Lucky for me I was on the downhill, and I drove it down off the pass until it finally gave out in Cle Elum.
I have bought 2 vehicles since then with a 300 and I honestly feel it is the best light truck engine ford ever produced.

My 300 is such a peice of crap. I've had it almost 3 year and I've out more in parts then I have in gas. Actually I don't even think I've went thru a full tank of gads in the thang before it took a crap again. I wana get rid if it but no one will wants a ford around here.

O2, fuel pressure sensor, ???? any ideas?

86 300 4x4. Regularly hauls 3000+ pounds of gravel, mulch, whatever. Only problem is the brakes dont really like the weight.

to bizrockstar,
My truck did the same kind of thing. It would just shut off like a switch and start up later ( could be a day, could be and hour). It's the PIP sensor in the distributor. I read that some people pull the distributor and change that sensor, I bought a distributor at O'rielly's for $100. Its and easy change if you have some abilities. Hasn't stalled in 20,000 miles since. If you buy used, it may happen with that. It's not an uncommon problem.
