I'm no engineer here, just extremely lazy so I spend great efforts trying to figure out how not to work hard....this usually results in my also sleeping in my truck.
There's an old saying, give the hardest task to the laziest person and they'll show you the easiest way to do it. There's a lot of truth to that.

C'mon OP, 500 lbs? Large upright pianos weigh about that.

Also, your tailgate would handle the weight of your tree. No problem.

Put the base in bed up against tailgate and rested the tree on the cab where the third brake light is. The rest just kinda pointed up in the air lol

It was the christmas tree used in their dorm room lobby or whatever. Girl panties were the primary decoration.

While not my personal story - it does make me miss being young and enjoying life! Now we're adults and.. you know - "responsibility". Eh.
That is awesome!

What is this thing you mention? Resonspabil....reponsablit......Never heard of it.

** The one big perk of aging is that after the house is paid off and the kids are out, you get to regress a bit. To use an astrological term, I call it "going into retrograde".

This Was a google estimate based on 12' and a 9" trunk. Watching 6 guys struggle to lift it only to the open bed, seemed lagit. I could barely slide it out of the truck. I cut the lower 18" off and the cut off truck was damn heavy. The branches I cut off alone was the size of my last years tree! After the surgery, 4 of us got it up and vertical. I would guess it was only 300-400 lbs really. But again, now the trunk is only about 7"!
And as far as the tailgate. Yea, def it can handle the weight. I was refferring to the fulcrum. It would teeter and fall right out. I only had bungees and didnt trust them with that weight obviously!

Well. As promised, we got it in and vertical. Took 4 of us. It was an absolute beast. Had to cut off the lower 18" to make it fit unfortunately. It stands at 11.5". My wife, by comparison, is 5'2".
Got close to just leaving it horizontal and dressing it on its side! Or as Danny suggested!
Sure smells good though...haven't had a real tree in 17 years. Missed it.
