It's all just smoke an mirrors. My SCAB with an 8' box has the same rating as a Reg Cab with a short box. You can't tell me that 500lbs will affect my front end weight the same as it would a shorter truck. Maybe Ford gets a kick back from every WDH sale. Or maybe they just never bothered to change the rating because nobody cares about anything but the headline max tow numbers.

Where this really becomes a problem is in towing boats. For a 6500 pound boat with a 450 pound tongue weight I have run a WDH on a f-150?

Curt takes you to 1,000, and it's cross bolted into the frame at the back and fwd about a foot.

That could be one explanation. When it comes to levers, 12 inches is a lot

That's funny as hell. So much for the tow guide that can't be ignored lest ye risk the wrath of all on the towing forum. So the Ranger can tow 750/7500 without WD but a HDPP and MAX tow long wheelbase F150 is limited to 500/5000.

Said it before and will say it again. Ford is just being too damn lazy and cheap to test what the 150 can actually do without WD and be in compliance with J2807

Just out of curiosity and laziness, is the J2807 test the same for the Ranger as it is for F150? Maybe the parameters are different in such a way that it's able to support more weight on the hitch? IDK

And just for S&Gs, what's the payload rating on the Rangers? 800-1000#?

I think the biggest disconnect is on the boat side of towing. It's really a crying shame there is not a boat specific test. If you have a travel trailer that is over 5000 pounds you should be running a WDH regardless of what you are towing it with. A boat on the other hand is another animal. Lots of boats have 5-7% tongue weight and are built on custom trailers that pull great without the slightest bit of sway. According to the guide if I was pulling a 6500 pound boat I would need a WDH. Most boat trailer manufacturers don't recommend use of a WDH due to stress on the trailer. You would have to buy that ridiculous pole tongue adapter thing to use one anyway. Its also stupidly impractical. When you show up at the boat ramp you are going to be that guy unhitching your trailer to remove the spring bars?

What this leads to is what is listed below. I can tow a 6500 wake board boat with an expedition, ranger, or a chevy 1500, but not a max-tow f150.

The new Ranger is a Unibody vehicle. I have yet to see a unibody that suggests the use of a WDH and some manufacturers actually say to not use them. My guess is they just didn't want to put the cost into the hard points and engineering to support a WDH.
