Default WDH not needed on Ranger for 7500 lbs

Hi All,

I'm curious if we can find the reason that a WDH is not needed on Ranger for 7500 lbs, yet our heavier truck needs it @ 5000 lbs. Anyone have an idea?

Thanks,

-kehyler

Max tongue weight is 750 pounds when properly equipped. Thats 10% of max, which means Ford assumes the driver is towing a boat or other light tongued trailer.

Thanks, but that doesn't seem to answer my question.

As I posted in another thread, though have not found anything that corroberates it, there is some sort of legal limit on 1/2 ton trucks to 5000 pounds max unless equipped with a WDH. However, GM lists their trucks to 7700 without one, while all the others are limited to 5000/500. I don't know it that is a DOT mandate, or what. I do know that a 97 Explorer V8 also has a 7500 pound rating.

If you find the law or regulation, remember to post it up in this thread for everyone's benefit.

Oh I will. I messaged that article owner to tell me what law they were referring too, but haven't heard anything yet. In a way it answers the why, but without seeing the actual law, I just think it is bogus.

There is no such law, it’s all manufacturers set limits based on j2807 requirements. My take from this is why is there no WDH rating? That suggests that a WDH should not be used with this vehicle.

It has to do with FAWR and RAWR. It could be that the rangers rear axle is pushed back closer to the bumper. The F150 has its rear axle close to the center of the bed. When leveraged with weight, it pulls weights up and off the front, I think it has to do with weight and balance.

those active bump stops look like air bags, maybe that’s part of the secret sauce
