2020 F150 with tow package but no Trailer Brake Controller.. some youtubers say plug and play.. others say there's some programming to make the computer recognize the controller... can anyone please clarify?
Thanks Much

If you are going with a Ford controller it need to be programed by the dealer or with forscan, If you are using a 3rd party like prodigy there is no programming.

If you get a Ford controller be sure it is a true Ford part and not a clone, lots of issues reported with the clones

You will like the integrated Ford controller better than a Prodigy (although a Prodigy worked fine on my old YukonXL). As mentioned, if you go the Ford route, don't skimp on an aftermarket clone. Many times hear of them not working correctly.

OEM is good because it can command trailer braking when sway is detected, and also reduce trailer braking if the truck's ABS kicks in to keep the trailer from dragging the truck off it's line of travel. Definitely the safest controller.

What you will need is going to be dependent upon what your truck originally came with. If it came with a 7-pin plug, most likely the TRM will be present, you only need to install the ITBC and enable the two lines of code. If the truck came with no hitch or 7-pin, you will most likely need a TRM and wiring for the plug. Some trucks without a TRM didn't get wiring to the relays at the engine fuse box.

And there doesn't seem to be a hard rule, only an average of what can be expected with the tow package the truck came with.

Check to see if your truck has the fuse in the fuse box. If it’s like my 2020, it won’t (although thankfully the wiring was there). If not, make sure the TBC part number you buy includes the fuse also. It’s a special Ford fuse and not just anything you can pick up at O’Reilly.

The p/n for the TBC I ordered did not include the fuse. When I began looking for just the fuse, it only seemed to be available in quantities of 5. So now I have 4 fuses I have nothing to do with…

I suppose on that note, if anybody does need one just PM me and I can stick one in an envelope and send it off.
