Question Towing question...

Hello...Newbie here with an important question...I have a 92 F-150 4x4 flairside automatic w/5.0 liter engine and a reese hitch...My wife wants to get a camper trailer that weighs about 4500lbs...Is that too heavy a load for this truck? Thanks in advance...

Enter the VIN, it should tell you the tow rating if I remember correctly.

I found this elsewhere on this forum. Give it a shot!

Default Thanks...

That site says my GVWR Range is 6,001 - 10,000 Pounds...I don't know what my truck weighs so I think I'll just look for a camper that weighs a lot less...

You should have no problem, but do not let a trailer dealer tell you what weight trailer you can tow they tend to go to heavy. I.E. they tell you your truck can tow 5000lbs trailer. So you can pull this beautifull trailer that weights 4600lbs. Thats great except you have no weight room left for gear, water food etc. I always prefer to tow/buy a trailer that the trailers gross weight doe not exceed my max tow capacity. Example that 4600 lb trailer has a 5600 gross weight rating then I would want my tow vehicle to be capable of pulling 6000 lbs or better.

'92 specs are no longer available for casual glancing, but the '96 F-150 with 3.55 axle ratio and 5.0L engine had a tow rating of about 7,000 pounds. Tow ratings are overstateed by about 1,000 pounds, so your truck should be able to tow a TT that weighs up to about 6,000 pounds. So a trailer that weighs only 4,500 pounds should be no problem at all.
