load capacity (lumber) on stock 2003 lariat cap
Sooooo... after 30yrs of being a Chevy guy; picking up my 1st Ford, mint 2003 Triton 5.4L Lariat with the stock cap today.
I did search both the net and this forum without luck prior to posting.
The question I have is how much weight (lumber) can the Cap hold. There are aluminum mounting plates in the 4 corners which I assume are the load bearing points; but... how much weight without reinforcement; or adding a Cap friendly ladder-rack can the Cap hold.
Many thanks,
-Adam

If you don't mind me asking...What exactly do you mean by "cap"?
A hard tonneau bedcover?
I'd think there would be a weight rating plaque somewhere on it. But I doubt it's more than 50 pound as a point load. maybe a hundred or so if spread out properly close to the mounting supports.

Hi, Ummmm... perhaps I'm using the wrong term, but around here (NE), it's an enclosure that usually is as high as the Cab roof, sometime with side access windows/panels, and are weather tight. Some are flimsy aluminum, some solid fiberglass, some look like panel truck enclosures with side access cabinets for tools. Quick search of google shows their also called Camper Shells, and Toppers Take a look at the "Leer" web site for some examples. A.R.E Caps another example.

ahh!! a camper shell...
now I read ya. Does it have the cross pieces that look like the luggage rack from an SUV?
If there are no loading plaques then I assume it was never intended to carry a load. But a call/email to someone like LEER could get you an idea of about what it could support.

Doh! SixShooter, thanks for the nudge. Leer has the ratings on all but two of their commercial caps at 150lbs (nuthin but Kayaks, bikes, bags, etc); commercial Caps are 400lbs which is better; but far from the 1000lbs of wet PT lumber I used to toss up there.
Thanks!
Thanks!

There's no such thing as a Ford factory option for a camper shell. There is a very nice factory optional hard tonneau cover, but no camper shell or "cap". So somebody added an aftermarket cap on your pickup. Look closely for some indication of the brand name and model number of the cap, then contact the manufacturer of the cap to determine the weight capacity of the roof of the cap. It's probably not more than 150 pounds.
