When I picked up my truck the prep guys had the tire pressure set to 38 PSI, I guess they thought it was a regular payload truck with a LT tire/wheel option. It rode fine but I triggered a TPMS code on the way home. I added some air and brought it up to 41 PSI where I would like to run when not loaded or hauling.
What air pressure are you people with HD trucks running. The roads around here aren't great and the lower pressure does help with the ride. I'm sure the tires are OK with it as it is the door PSI on non HD trucks with the same LT tires.
Is there anyway to reset the trucks TPMS warning system to a lower pressure?
That's a first I've heard. What does the door sticker say? You should run a cold PSI of what's on that sticker, towing or not.
Mine says 35 PSI and that's what I set it at. It'll warm up a couple PSI when driving after the tires warm up. When I'm towing, the extra weight and extra heat bring the PSI up to 40-41 PSI. I've never had any issues, tires aren't too soft or too hard, rides and handles nice, and the tires are wearing perfectly even. 94k on my 2015's original Hankook tires that came on the truck. They are due for replacement soon.
I don't have an HD, just max tow, but when I switched to LT-E tires from the P-radials that came stock the Costco tech told me that 45 PSI was the required equivalent (vs 35 on the door).
In any case if you have the stock tires on it just use what the door sticker says.
Lt tires are a bit different with a wider PSI range. It is common to run a lower pressure unloaded then increase it when loaded or towing . My daughter has a non-HDPP truck with the optional LT tires and wheels (same as the HDPP) and I'm pretty sure her door sticker is 38 PSI so I'm sure it's not an issue running at that pressure unloaded. I would like to stop the stupid TPMS from firing a code.
I have a regular old 2013 SuperCrew 6.5’ F-150, no heavy duty tow or payload.
But, it rolled off the factory floor with Load Range E all terrains. 55 psi front, 60 psi rear.
The tpms will trip at about 50 psi, and no tire shop ever seems to check the sticker. They all put in 36 psi and the light pops on!
I do get great mileage and tire wear at 55-60 psi, but the ride is a little tough. Current tires are Cooper ATP.
That infamous yellow sticker.
^I hear ya, it’s a stupid heavy truck unloaded for an F150, almost 6,000 lbs. I’ve had super duty work trucks that felt lighter! It’s no wonder they went to the aluminum body to save weight and boost payload.
I have had it technically overloaded simply by hauling 5 big Wisconsin cheese eating people in the cab (800#) and my Polaris ATV and some camping gear in the bed (another 700-800#)
Yep, my truck is pretty pathetic when it comes to payload!
