Default Engine coolant temp gauge

Hi All,

Can someone tell me how my engine coolant temp gauge works? Like is it an "actual" gauge where it registers every increase in temp, or do they play some silly game where everything reads as "normal" until past a certain point?

I believe the one that is in the dash is either on or off. No increments. I have a scangauge which connects to the OBDII port and I have it programed to display the Engine water Temp. Its output is in degrees and you can watch it as it warms up. The temp gradually climbs.

normal until it starts to overheat. then it goes full hot and goes into fail-safe mode

You can enable the gauge to read the actual value in f or c with Forscan, same for the tranny temp.

This is only true for 8'' screens, right?

Have you ever watched it towing? I'm curious, I bet that going up a decent hill, that the engine coolant temp rises 5, maybe 10 degrees or so. If the scangauge shows this, does the engine gauge on the dash move at all?

mine sits at 95c for normal temp. I just turned it on a month ago so I have not towed the trailer yet to see the increase in temp.

When you tow, remember me haha. I'd be really curious to know if we have an actual or dumb gauge.
