Yep, sometimes you just have to use your head. That would be 31.4 FEET !!! My calculator doesn't have a feet or inches button.

I will bet you are over all your trucks ratings with that trailer.I will also guarantee that if god forbid you get into an accident the cops will have something to say. Your insurance co will be the first to check and see if your within your trucks ratings just so they can deny your claim. Be safe!

Insurance will NOT deny a claim for being overloaded. They can't. They pay out when people do lots of stupid things including being overloaded. They pay out on drunk driving accidents and that is much more negligent,

You probably will be looking for a new company afterwords though.

Then the rule is misstated. Trying to explain that dividing inches by 5 and the answer is in feet makes no sense to anyone that passed third grade arithmetic. It should be multiply the wheelbase inches by 2.4 to get maximum trailer length in inches, then divide by 12 to convert inches to feet.

157 inches x 2.4 = 376.8/12 = 31.4 feet long TT, which would have an inside length of about 27 feet . That's certainly a generous length to be towing with an F-150.

How about a really short tow vehicle? '95 thru '06 Jeep Wrangler has a wheelbase of 93.4 inches. Pump it up with the biggest optional engine and it can pull a small TT.
93.4 inches x 2.4 = 224.16/12=18.68 feet, which would have inside length of less than 15 feet. Yep, still a decent rule of thumb. You probably shouldn't try to tow a TT longer than that with a Jeep Wrangler.

Back on topic for Voges: That rule of thumb for a 145" wheelbase SuperCrew shorty would be a max trailer length of 29 feet tip to tail, including hitch, rear bumper, and spare tire mounted on the rear of the trailer. So a 31' trailer would be a tad too long for that tow vehicle if that rule of thumb were valid. But 31 foot TT will probably overload the F-150 over its GVWR, so that's the reason to look for a different TT - because of wet and loaded hitch weight and not because of trailer length.

It should make sense to someone who took algebra. 2.4/12 = .2 = 1/5

There is a reason you get the same answer. Dividing by 5 is a simplified form of the equation with conversions built in.
