Default Brake Controllers

I am setting my F150 up and the TT dealer is suggesting their brake controller that costs $350 but I have been told purchase the OEM brake controller from Ford. I am not sure what brand they are suggesting.

OEM style is the best because it's a pressure driven system and the transducer is already built into the truck. It's plug and play. The next best is probably the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 which is an accelerometer based system and almost as good, but should cost half of what the dealer is quoting you.

I bought OEM for under $100, an Ohio dealership selling on ebay. Programming at local dealership was another $75.

Here is a post I made regarding the TBC. I bought the TBC form Fairway Ford for $96 installed myself, bought the Forscan cable $20 and enabled the TBC. With the ford factory TBC your anti lock brakes will also work on the trailer I'm told.

Dealer is quoting me $550 to install the oem module. That seems high.

I'm not a tech guy at all (laptop to enable the TBC) and I was able to install (I am a mechanical guy) and enable very easily. The videos will walk you through it making both very easy. The first thing you want to do is check that #24 fuse. If it's there, there will be a fuse in that port. If the fuse is there, pull it and look down the port for the metal prongs that the fuse go into just to make sure. Verify this yourself before taking it back to the dealer. If the #24 fuse is not there the dealership will have to run some wiring. By the video, it looks a little involved. I am definitely not an electrical guy. Maybe that why the dealership want $$$. I would also ask the service guy what work will (in detail) be done. He probably won't know and try blowing some smoke up your butt. If he seems like he doesn't know ask to speak to the tech that will be doing the work. If you have the work done at the dealer, when you pick up your truck have them walk you through what they did, and more importantly, have them show you what that did. Again, ask for the tech that performed the work to show you. If the dealer is quoting $550 just to install the OEM TBC walk away. That is way too much money. If your truck does not have the center console and has the bench seat that has the fold down center part, the install is even easier. Mine has the center console with the shifter in the console. It took me about 45 minutes...maybe even a little less to install the TBC.

Let us know what you decide to do and how it turns out.

Rick

I have the center console. I was told they install it in the dash, I believe right below the trailer back up assist dial.
