I got the brake controller installed, being an XL not and XLT it was even easier than the video. I think 5 screws and about 15 minutes.

I bought the OBD MX controller, and got it linked to my laptop, got into the config settings, and I need a license key to use it. So I registered on their forum, and I am waiting to get a license key so I can program it. This was so easy, it makes me want to learn more about how to program stuff in a truck even though I traditionally shy away from programming cars. Hopefully I can get it all sorted out today. I am buying my new trailer on Thursday, had to buy a 2 5/16' ball and hitch, so I will be all ready to go! Found a great deal on a 18' car hauler with a 2 foot dovetail, twin axle brakes, led lighting, winch mount. It's a car mate. Brand new $3000. I am going to be buying it cash so I am hoping I can get a free spare tire at least out of the deal LOL. I will post updates and pics as I get them.

I got everything up and working! Forscan was pretty easy to use once I got the Bluetooth ODB MX controller recognized on my work laptop. I was able to succesfully change the setting for the trailer controller, and I saw them in my heads up display. I don't have a triler hooked up right now, but when I hit the brake gain controller, it did say "trailer disconnected" so I know it was at least looking at the signal.

Now I am wondering what else I can do to my LX with Forscan that will be cool features to have. There is an annoying window safety thing that sometimes when the window gets up about 3/4 of the way it rolls back down like a garage door, I'd like to turn that off, does the 2016 have the bambi feature? or does it allow you to have High/Low and fog on when highs are on? I wish I had a boost gauge, but the LX doesn't have digital gauges so I don't think I have that option in the display..

Anyone else do any reprogramming with an LX and what did you do?

Thanks

Hey GT_80, nice trailer and great job installing the TBC. Did you have to adjust the TBC settings or are you using the defaults? I am looking to find instructions for using the TBC. For example, I have heard, a loaded trailer requires a higher TBC setting than an unloaded one, and the trailer brakes could lockup, if the setting is too high (too much voltage being applied to the trailer brakes).

defaults are useless. Every trailer is different. I picked the medium brake gain, and mine is set at level 6 which just tugs lightly on the truck when I test it when the trailer is empty. And yes, you have to add gain according to weight. More weight, more gain. You don't want the trailer tires to lock up, but the trailer needs to help the truck slow down. I bet the owners manual has tips for setting gain.

I started out on low gain, and set at 10 it was barely tugging on the trailer empty. So I set it to medium gain, and kept upping the level till I fealt it was enough trailer brake when it was empty. I'll do the same when its full

Default Installing a Brake Controller

Thanks for any help or advise.
I was able to take my dash apart and take a few photos. I also took some at the back for reference for some help. I know nothing about wiring one of these and I hope you can direct me to the proper part numbers and I am hoping it is a plug and play. Thank you with any help or advice.

The plug in the dash looks right, but I'm not sure about the wiring under the bumper... My truck has the 7 round and 4 flat connector in the bumper, above where the hitch is. There is a huge round plug in it, and that does both the four flat and the seven round I believe. It does not look like you have that in the rear... May need to talk to a dealer- I would call Tasca ford maybe, they sell a lot on ebay, and may be able to point you to the correct harness if you need it. The brake controllers for the 2015-2017 I think are all the same - I bought this one:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/2015-17-F-1...72.m2749.l2649

and this:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/ScanTool-42...72.m2749.l2649

then it was about 20minutes to install the controller, and a little time to connect and figure out the OBDLink with Forscan. A dealer would have charged me over $400 to do the work, I did for about $160 and less than 1 hour.

Yes, you'll need a 7-pin socket and harness. Talk to your Ford dealer parts guy, or call Tasca as suggested above. I have added these parts already to my 2016 XLT but have yet to hang the Ford Accessories Class III receiver hitch on my truck. I am not adding tow capacity, I am only adding the option for trailer ball height adjustment beyond the step bumper trailer ball placement, and I am adding the wiring for electric trailer brakes.

I'd give you the part numbers I used, but they may be different than what your 2015 VIN calls for. Don't ask me how I know... been a wild goose chase, here.

I have a question about trailer brake on my 2010 F150 FX4 has non lcd gauge cluster. My truck has the 7 and 4 pin connectors but no brake controller. All videos and info I’ve seen the trucks have lcd screen in cluster. I’ve been looking into oem brake controllers and seen one with and without built in screen on the controller it’s self, just wondering if I’d be able to use the one with no screen built in as I know the guys with the lcd screen have an “app”. I’d appreciate any help/info.
