Default In bed camper Tie down question

Hello I have a 2016 F150 SuperCrew and looking to get a in bed truck camper. Ive mentioned it to a few people and they are saying I shouldnt because of the aluminun bed and not strong enough to hold the camper down with the stake pocket mount type tie downs. Saying to only get the frame mounted tie down mounts.

Does anyone have a camper and using the bed mounted tie down mounts?

Any failures from it?

Any recommendations from Ford or from a camper dealer on this? Ill be buying a used camper and completely new to in bed campers.

Thank You

Phil

As long as it stays under the weight of your payload printed on the yellow sticker inside the drivers door, I've never heard of other drawbacks. There are few that will stay in weight. Keep in mind, the carry capacity on the yellow tag includes Zero besides a full tank of gas. Everything after that is counted in the weight, including you, the dog, and the beer. and the camper.

These people were specifically talking about the bed mounts and that the alum body isn't strong enough to deal with the up and side to side pulling for holding the camper down.

I’ll see if I can find it but yes, the tie downs and box links have a load limit for both straight across and diagonal…

I could only find info on the box link cleats…my opinion, I would use the same load limits. The box link cleats and the 4 tie downs use the same nut plates and bolts. Box links use four and the tie downs only use 2. Not sure if the thickness of the metal on the 4 tie downs is any thicker.

so you want to use the 4 tie downs to hold a slide in camper in place? Not sure if that would work? What about removing bed bolts and putting rings under?

Are all the 2015+ F250 and F350 with slide in campers steel bodies? Only the F150 is aluminum?

BoxLink capacity is 275# pull straight across, 600# diagonally as listed in my owners manual.
Searched in the manual and internet on the cargo cleat loops, no luck.
AFAIK, Truck campers use an under frame cross piece you hook your camper tie downs to.

The link isn't working for me but thanks for trying. The box links I'm assuming are the built in tie dow loops at the bottom inside of the bed walls? If so that's not how these campers tie down. The camper is wider than thw box and tie point is outisde the box. The camper tie downs you attach to the bed go into the stake holea at thw top and hang a mount point outaide the bed. Its this stake box mount point im questioning can handle thw stress of securing a 1500 lb or so camper.

Thanks. Phil

I think the 250s and up got alum in 2017 or 2018.

With bigger heavier campers that usually go in a bigger truck like these, they use a tie down point that attaches to the frame.

I could do that but if I can avoid that expense and having metal bars hanging low and on the sides of my truck that I can bust my Shinn on or bend if going off road id like to avoid that.

Thanka

Hi I trying to avoid the expense of the heavy duty camper mounts to the frame. I want to use the camper mounts that go into the stake mount holes.on the top of the bed sides.

oh, gotcha…the holes in top.

ford has a whole pamphlet/brochure for slide in campers, I feel like this should have already figured out a few years ago
