6R80 overheating
Hi,
I have a 2016 Ford F-150 XLT Roush Edition with Phase 2 supercharger with tow package.
Last year, towing a 7,000lb 28ft travel trailer, I seen 236 on my transmission temp gauge. I took it to the local transmission shop and they noticed that my transmission lines were leaking. It wasn't a bad leak, it didn't even register on the stick, still showed full according to the trans guy. We replaced the trans lines, trans thermostat, and trans fluid with Amsoil. I asked the ford dealer to do a flush but they didn't have a machine to do that and recommended the local transmission place which did have the machine. So I had the system flushed. The transmission guy said that the fluid looked good and didn't smell burnt or anything. I only had 30,000 miles on the truck. Its up to 40,000 miles now.
This year, I was towing a 2,200 lb equipment trailer up a slight grade that's about a 3/4 of a mile and I seen 226 on the trans temp gauge.
It shifts fine.
Any idea on why the temps are getting into the 220s and 230s?
I ordered a mishimoto trans cooler and a PPE trans pan in hopes to keep the higher temps at bay for towing my travel trailer.
When I drive the truck without towing, I'm between 193-195 trans temp and 200-204 engine temp. Engine temp gets up to 210 while towing, but never seen it any higher.
Any suggestions or comments? I'd really like to stay out of the 220's if I can help it. What is causing the excessive heat?
Thanks,
Brian

im not a trans guy but i do know there is a temp activated valve that allows fluid to pass thru the trans cooler, i would start by looking at that and make sure you dont see a temp difference between the inlet and outlet of that and also make sure the lines arent kinked going to the cooler.
i wouldnt think with only 40,000 miles the cooler has become blocked from clutch residue.
good luck

Thanks Brian. Do you have a part number or picture of the valve? Is that also referred to as the transmission thermostat? I think it is and i did replace that (allegedly). Though, doing some research on that, im not sure my truck has one. It looks like it might have a external bypass cooler unit. Which, is that the oil cooler?
I also replaced the transmission lines, but I will check the lines going to and from the trans cooler.
Thanks Black, I was at 226 at 45-50mph in 3rd gear pulling 2200lb unloaded trailer the other day. I never seen above 220 with my 2019 Ford F150 3.5 ecoboost.

The 10R140 goes even higher on the Superduties.
Turn on the AC next time trans temps get high, and watch the trans temp fall a bit ( its counter intuitive).
AC on turns both cooling fans on high continuously.

Thats pretty high. Never seen numbers that high. But pull a heavy trailer up the Ike with supercharger and full throttle might get you there, and more. I dont drive that way.
I was pulling an unloaded 2200 lb trailer in 3 rd gear at 45mph with a trans temp of 226.
I have a 7,000lb travel trailer. I can’t imagine what the temps are going to be when I tow that.
Im not expecting to pull it up the hill at 70mph and not have the temps rise.
I drive accordingly.
Can you answer my questions ? What temps would you pull over at ?
