2014 FX4 - Red Coyote Edition

Welp, been lurking on these forums for long enough. Thought it was time to post up my truck now that I finally got off my @$$ and gave her a proper bath and got some decent pics. Not a huge "build", as it's pretty much cosmetic only changes, but I've made it my own and the goal was to make it look as though it could have been custom ordered from the factory this way. Most, if not all, changes I tried to use OEM parts from different years. My inspiration mostly came from the newer (gasp) Silverado Redline edition trucks. I love the red tow hooks and other little red touches on those trucks, but I also really like the chrome accents. I'm not a fan of the full chrome "package", but little accents are classy to me. Plus I wanted to have something different and didn't want it to be like all the other black on black on black on black trucks that are a dime a dozen on the road today.

Hope ya'll like it. Lemme know if you have any comments or questions. Otherwise, thanks for checking her out and I'll see you on the forums!

Skip all the crap below if you just want to see a few pics, otherwise here's what I've done;

I'm undecided on the grille. It doesn't look bad, but I'm not 100% in love with it. Might just end up wrapping the two inner bars as well. EDIT: Decided to black out the remaining bars. Updated pics at end of thread.

LOVE the way this turned out. Special thanks to KoolPonyCar and his 29 page thread on here for how to do this mod properly.

The center caps and calipers turned out really nice. It's the little things that make a difference.

The Dura Dressing tire coating I used really pops in this pic. Should last several months and well worth the effort.

Steering wheel overlay was a nice touch to bring all the red/black together. And although you can't tell in this pic, SYNC3 is a game changer!

Thanks! Looks like you're in Lakeville, bout 20 minutes from me.

Nicely done, really like the engine bay. Count me a no vote on the chrome grill, go all black. Great build!

Thanks! I think I agree on the grille. Won't be hard to wrap them up... which is part of the reason I wrapped it in the first place. It allows me to experiment a bit. Funny thing is, now that I did it that way, I'm noticing that the new Ford Ranger Lariat has a similar style with the two inner bars being chrome.

You wrapped that grill your self?

Looks factory

1995GreenMachine 07-25-2020 04:37 PM

That engine looks CLEAN, I’ll have to find that thread on the covers. My coil covers are on their way but I’ve pretty much given up on the 5.0 engine cover.

Nice truck!

Yes sir, I did! First time wrapping anything as well. I saw on another thread here where someone wrapped their tailgate applique with the 3M gloss black metallic and it was a super close match to tuxedo black. I wanted to give it a try and experiment a bit with the chrome bars, so that's what I ended up with. I just watched a handful of "CKWraps" YouTube videos and then went to town. If you get up really close, you'll definitely notice imperfections but it passes the 5ft test and came out pretty good.

Thanks for the kind words! Here, I'll save you the trouble. The engine cover thread is below. It's a long read but lots of good information on how to get it done the right way.

I vote for the red on the grille. It looks awesome and kind of pulls the red tow hooks together.

Apdl 07-27-2020 04:01 PM

Just don't do blue and drive to Minneapolis....

1995GreenMachine 07-27-2020 10:40 PM

I’d go with black. I don’t like the red next to the amber(?) LEDs. Other than that, the red was kinda cool.

I'm leaning this way as well. The more I look at just having them all match, it brings out the tow hooks and Raptor LEDs more because your eyes aren't diverted to the bars. I think it's one of those "less is more" things.

Brick'S hithouse 07-28-2020 11:37 AM

I still vote all black on the grill BUT how about a red/black FORD emblem in it hhmmm....

I actually went through 4 different variations of the Ford emblem. Red/black, black/chrome, all black, and one cheap American Flag one that faded within 2 weeks and was crappy. For some reason I just didn't like the red/black, and the all black just looked like it was missing something. The black with leaving 'Ford' chrome spoke to me the most so that's what I went with. It's all about finding the perfect balance of black with red and chrome accents.

New interior addition today. Also pulled the trigger on a steering wheel... updates to come on that!

ProClip F150 angled mount and a Scosche MagicMount XL. Makes use out of that stupid cubby on the right that isn't big enough to actually fit anything. My only complaint would be it doesn't angle toward the driver enough, but otherwise I like it!

New steering wheel!!

This is top 3 favorite things I've done to this truck! I was going back and forth on getting a Raptor wheel but they are $360 on eBay. I was just about to say eff it and order it when I decided to do some research on alternatives. Boy am I glad I did! Came across a thread on here for "Handkraftd" steering wheels that a few have put on their 2015+ trucks, which look really similar to a Raptor wheel but IMHO better/nicer. Looked on eBay and found one for $275 w/ free shipping brand new. Offered $250 and they accepted. Shipping was fast, and swapping the wheel was even faster. I think it look and feels phenomenal! The red matches the seat piping almost perfectly, and the perforated leather/pleather sides match the seat inserts. It looks like it could have come from the factory. Could not be happier!

Side note, I have a steering wheel for sale haha.

Pics are before / during the swap of the internals / and after.

Internals and side plastics/buttons just swap over to the new wheel. Really easy to do as everything literally just pulls out and is held in by rubber nubs. The center plate easily comes out and all the screws are T20.

Perfect match for your interior. I too swapped for a Handkraftd and am very happy I did. Good choice! Hope the swap went smoothly for you, I hang a small hangup on mine lol. Once again great choice for this truck.

Thank you! My swap was less than 1 beers worth haha. Went really smooth. The longest part of the process was just swapping over the guts.

Also, I just got caught up on your build. Beautiful truck!

Ok, the final mod (for now) is complete. Decided against the chrome bars in the middle of the grille. Went ahead and wrapped them up in 3M Gloss Black Metallic, same as the rest. Didn't take pics because the truck is crazy dirty again (sigh), but it basically looks like this now thanks to photoshop.

I like the all black better for sure...

Well, I thought I was done upgrading this truck but it looks like I needed one more thing...

Just pulled the trigger on AMP power steps! Should get them installed over the weekend and I'll hopefully get some pics up soon after.

Ran into a bit of a hiccup with a RMA return because of some damage however, I finally got the new set on and found time to give her a bath for pics. Three hours of installing and adjusting with a few beers and a couple bloody knuckles was all worth it when my 2 year old saw them deploy and said "wow, dat's pwetty cool daddy" hahaha. It's the little things in life.

Anyway, couple pics of them tucked in and deployed. I'm sure this is nothing new for everyone as these have been around forever, but this is probably the single best upgrade I've done so far!

Been a little over a year now, and they're still working perfectly. I had one instance of "binding" but a little WD40 and haven't had a problem since. They worked flawlessly through the MN winter last year, even with ice/salt buildup.

Since the last pics, the wrap on my grill has gone to hell. I pulled the trigger on a PTM STX Sport Grille and now have that installed. Changed a few other little things as well. Once I get around to washing the damn thing, I'm gonna post some updated pics. The ole girl has 140K miles on now :(

For the steps, especially where you are, pressure wash the pins/hinges, and use a dry silicone or dry PTFE spray lube liberally on the pins whilst actuating them, easiest to just quickly unscrew the motor at the rear to move the step by hand.

I have a similar black truck, we're the tow hooks powdercoated or did you buy them like that. I'm actually having a hard time finding ones in red. I found ones that look identical for a newer style truck, wasn't sure if they fit, guess I'll be the test mule on that.. sharp truck, I want to do the steering wheel mod and engine cover mods now lol

Haha, thanks for the kind words! I have an addiction to making things my own/custom. I've since swapped to a genuine Raptor steering wheel only because I found a really good deal on one and my other one was starting to wear a little. So rather than fix it, just replaced it since I couldn't pass up the price I found. The engine cover mod is one of my favorite things I've done. I get compliments by the techs at Ford every time I bring it in for an oil change haha.

Now, to answer your question. Those are the factory tow hooks, I just took them off and brought them into a local guy here that does powder coating. They were black/boring and starting to rust a bit, so I took the opportunity to add some color and have them done. They're extremely easy to take off and put back on. The guy here has his own little shop and charges stupidly low prices, so it was a no-brainer for me. I've had several things coated by him for my truck.
