I know I waited till 1000 miles. When I had my power stroke truck they said that the engine was broken in at the factory also. But the owners manual still had a break in period for the rears and transmission.

IMO, the motor is "broken in" as soon as it's fired up coming off the assembly line. You can argue the trans and rearend needs some time to "break in" but I don't think that takes 1000 miles either. Everybody has a different opinion on the duration of the "break in" time, but I'm convinced Ford writes it in the manual for liability concerns. If a part was assembled improperly, built to the wrong tolerances, or prematurely fails due to a defect, it would show up within the first 1000 miles. They just don't want that kind of stuff happening with a trailer in tow.

Break it in just like you normally drive, don't be afraid to get serious with it now and then. It's a ford, they run the best when you don't baby them.
