tfi ignition
has anyone upgraded their old oil filled ignition coils to the thick film ignition coil? I belong to the International Full Size Jeep Association forum and this is a common practice for Grand Wagoneers and the like...I have an'85 Grand Wag that I have done this upgrade to and it works very well...the Jeep uses a Ford duraspark distributor and the upgrade includes a cap and cap adaptor and rotor from a '79f150,plug wires and thick film ignition coil from a '93 up fseries...then there are other options to go further with it up to and including an MSD box...sorry for the long winded intro,my question is can the tfi coil from a '93 up f series be used on the '79 f150 without causing any electrical issues?? also would I need to re-gap the plugs due to the increased spark? I did have to open up from .35 to .44 on the jeep to compensate...
Read your post back on the 2nd, seem to me you had your answers already. If a Ford ignition will work on a jeep, would think it would work on a Ford. Don't recall if you mentioned which engine. The 302 engines during the two time periods used two different firing orders, just watch your wire placement. The 79 era was 15426378, mid eighties and on is 13726548. Would think yes the plug gap would be increased also, check with tune up sheets for the gap size from which it was removed.

Thanks, Good old Bill, the engine in the Ford is a Jasper crate 400 big block...wires are run and she fires up good and strong (when the coil decides to come to the party...) You are right about having the answer- I did not see any reason why it would not work, was concerned about the plug gap if it needed to be increased from .44...guess I was looking for someone who had done it or some reassurance that my line of thinking was sound-not a rocket scientist but I have my moments...
. Anyway, I appreciate your reply, thank you again
Works fine. I'm also in IFSJA and CFSJA. done it on all the Waggy's, and also on the 76 460 in the MH, and the 73 Bronco. However, I like the
Per Tronix set up better. It completely removes the troublesome Dur crap box, and is very simple. If you have points, it replaces them as well.
