Two weeks ago I was driving south on I-87, that is in NY state,it was 9:00PM. I was just north of Newburgh and the intersection of 87 and 84, about 5-10 miles and I see this odd looking, what I thought was an odd looking aircraft light coming from the east and heading west, real fast and at a maybe 45 degree angle. Well, it starts breaking up in the sky and I realize its a meteorite burning through the sky breaking up into 3-5 chunks. Would have been a cool u-tube video. Ya never know what this cam might capture.

For what it's worth, I spoke with the manufacturer of the one I was using that I mentioned earlier. He said the most common cause for these things burning out was the rebooting/power surge when starting the vehicle. He recommended always unplugging the camera before starting the car which obviously can be a pain. Apparently this is the main purpose of the 'power smart' addition. Probably worth having.

Yeah I'm going to have to call BS on what he said, the voltage on start is rarely below 11 volts and then only with a weak battery or a dragging starter. DC is a lot different than AC and if a device is so sensitive to a slight voltage drop for a couple of secs at most then it's garbage equipment period.

I can promise you that there are a lot more sensitive electronics built into these trucks than some camera.

Marketing hype, BS etal.

True enough, I certainly can't dispute what you say as I'm no expert, however when he gave me this information on the one I was using it was when I called him to ask a technical question long after I owned it so he wasn't benefitting by a sale or anything like that. It just seems interesting that another manufacturer has now came out with a solution for this 'problem', whether it's a problem that actually exists or not. I think what I had called him about was the fact that the Mustang accessory plug was 'always on' so the camera didn't shut off with the ignition. I was going to have the accessory plug wired differently so it would shut off with the ignition but he recommended not doing this and just remembering each time to manually unplug it and plugging it in AFTER the car was started. I did this successfully for a couple of years. The one time I forgot I got back in the car and started it, then realized I had left it plugged in since the night before. After that, it stopped working. No telling if it stopped working because of just being left on overnight (it used to get hot when left on) or the starting but either way it's not working now. I could probably get a hold of them and see if I can get it fixed but I'm always looking for the 'latest and greatest' anyway so I like this thread.

Going through my online purchases looking for a receipt I came across the email where he mentioned what I stated above. I thought his comment was over the phone but it wasn't apparently….this is what he stated exactly:

On Sep 4, 2012, at 4:05 PM, Greg Goodale wrote:

Mr. Taddei,

There are a couple things the Glocam manual suggests but, after our extensive testing and research, Glonex does not recommend.

1) If the Glocam is hard-wired, the initial surge when starting a car could short-circuit the product. We have not conclusively determined this but do let our customers know that this could be an issue. If you remember to unplug the wire from the camera when sarting the car, this would eliminate the issue.
2) Using a 16GB micro SD card. The Glocam writes a total of 3000 files before it begins recording over the oldest files. This amounts to approximately 10GB of data. Using a 16GB SD card would be a waste of money and we advise our customers of this.
3) The 4GB Class 6 card provided is the minimum suggested card. Class 10 High Capacity is recommended if you use and 8GB.

The 12V power cord if over 15 ft long. We installed ours behind the window molding (starting from the rear view mirror) and along the carpet and door molding to the 12v outlet. Dash clips were also provided with the Glocam should you need to secure it under the dash.

Since you are local, I’d be happy to meet you and help with the install and bring a wire harness for you to review.

I found the one I mean, here it is: http://dashboardcamerareviews.com/lukas-lk-7900-ace/

For small size, just search one like http://www.szswill.com/car-camera-hd...mera-d310.html it is the smallest currently.

Not sure if you already ended up getting one but check out:

http://www.dod-tech.ca/product-categ...board-cameras/

Either of the LS models are awesome. I have the DOD LS330W Full HD cameras, bought 3 of them. I had mine for a 6 months or so and something happened to it, so I went back to the store and they gave me a brand new one. No questions asked. They have great customer service and provide you with a year warranty. Nothing happened to my dads or boyfriends so I guess mine was just a lemon. It works crystal clear at night and is all in all a great camera. With their customer service and full 1080P recording quality I definitely recommend it.

I bet dashcams will become very common, very quickly. I'm betting insurance companies may offer a couple dollar discount or other incentive for having a dash cam. Even if you're at fault it can save them time from their claims adjusters having to recreate situations.

I'm motivated to get one, will wait to later this year, as they're getting much better very quickly. As they become super cheap and common, theft won't be much of an issue.

I think back and can't figure out when a dash cam would have hurt me, but several times is would have helped me.

QUESTION:
Are there any "always on" fuses at the passenger kick panel? I know there is switched power and switched power with delay. I'm thinking I'd like to have an always on line for a hardwired dash cam and hardwired iPhone charger. Then if my phone was near death, I could leave it in the truck for a half hour to charge, then come back and get it.

I'd like the cleanest install possible, whether it's reversible or not. No cutting/hacking, etc. Kicking around the idea of putting in a 6 circuit fuse block or maybe (Fuzeblocks).
