Arrow 1985 f150 4.9 i6

I am in the middle of a complete resto. At the time the engine was pulled it had 307,404 miles on origional internal parts. The distributer was about to go out and the carb was out of tune, but other than that it started every time, first time. If it wasnt for scarring on one, 2 inch spot on the #1 cylinder wall it wouldnt have even needed to be machined at all. My truck has the 4 speed manual trans, hands down the best combination you can have for a truck.

After putting close to 900 pounds in the box of this truck I've come to this huge understanding.......This motor, and these trucks freaking love having a load in the box..... for a little bit of time when it snowed I had around 500 pounds in the box and the truck got somewhat better milage than unloaded and ran like a tank, loud and strong, added another 300 pounds into the box, ran even tougher and got even louder, milage then went to ****, but better than some other trucks!

My friend and I built a 300 straight 6 back in 1986 with headers, a custom intake manifold for a 4 barrel carb, cam and MSD ingnition. We put it in a 1966 Econoline van and it ran mid 12's in the 1/4 mile. At one point we installed a NOS system just for fun and it could get the front wheel off the ground. The van is still around, my brother is now the owner and is bringing it back to life. The motor is still running strong!

I have had a 96 F150 with the I6 for about 10 yrs. That motor is so dependable I never get any quality wrench time on it. The truck is a different story. The odometer just passed 120k, it is just broke in.

I bought my 94 last year with 130,000 on it. I just passed 135,000. On a side note I was reading the manual and it says the break-in period for these engines is 150,000.

The trucks wear out long before the motors.
