Default Need more powerrrrr

Hi guys,
I have a 97 4.2 4x4 5 speed. The only things I have done to the truck in terms of performance is the gotts mod, cut out all 4 cats and put 2 magnaflow hi flow cats in and put a flowmaster super 44 on. The truck runs on p255/75/r16's (stock 235/70).
I often drive my truck through the mountains and when it isn't loaded it is a dream. If I load up my box with camping gear and my 12 foot boat, you can definitely feel it.
I am going to start gathering winter wood and I want to haul a cord of wood at a time. I am worried that my truck won't be able to handle it. I need to be able to drive 150km through rolling hills without much difficulty. Is this possible?
What are some potential upgrades for a few more ponies? I am thinking of a squires turbo system but I want to try to keep it under a grand.
Any help appreciated,
Thx

Super.... seeing that the owner aborted the project... due to a weak bottom end, do you think it was his particular truck or the overall motor design being weak

Yeah I can't provide any good assessment about your 4.2l strength compared to his. honestly I think a engine swap its the best solution. There are plenty of v8s out there...it shouldn't be too expensive to drop one in and stay with factory spec d hardware.

Yeah, I was thinking about picking up a 5.4 from a junkyard for ~200 bucks and rebuilding it but then I have to change the tranny and stuff starts getting complicated.
I kinda like the v6 I just wish I could have like 50 more horsepower.

I looked in to dropping a small v8 in to my ranger when I cracked a head on my 4.0L. It was going to be a major pita, so i just fixed the dang thing... but yeah I know what you mean.
