Rule of thumb is usually twice the wieght of your truck. Me personally, no less than 10,000#. Especially if any of your buddies have super duties. But the reason for 10,000# is because you wont be working the winch to death everytime you pull by maxing out the wieght.

If I was looking for one I would go 3X the truck weight. Weld not bolt it to the mounting and Weld not bolt that to the Frame. I had a 12K on my Jeep Wranglwer. I never got into anything I could not get myself out of. Also I had enough line and extra cable, Line to go what ever distance it took to conect to something solid enough to get the job done.

I would have to disagree with welding. The rough off roading would eventually cause it to crack. I would put 6 1/2" grade 8 bolts in it. Then maybe run a weld along the sides.
