Default will someone please explain rim offset?

I always hear about people having -6 or +9 offset on their rims? Someone explain what this means?

Every wheel has a centerline. And with 0 offset you have the same amount of wheel forward of the lug nuts as behind. If they are negative offset they over hang more outside and if they are positive or inset then they have more lip inside.

So like +6 will make the wheels stick out more than like -3? Or would it be the other way around?

A negative offset will make your tires and wheels stick out more.
A positive offset will make your tires and wheels tuck in more.

Ok so when I get new rims I want them to stick out maybe an inch. Nothing crazy , just give it a little bit of stance. What amount of negative offset would that be? How much negative offset do y'all think looks good? Pics are appreciated.

Is that too much? I don't want anything crazy, just something that looks good and is somewhat noticeable

I have -24mm 16x10s on my truck. I would rather have -36mm like bryan95
