What's up with this spark plug I just took out?

Agreed, way too short.

Or, of course, there's doing things the "right way".

Thanks again everyone. Sounds like I should get this thing fixed "correctly." Can anyone attest to the difficulty (or hopefully ease) of going the time-sert approach? Seems like it would be easy to screw up and make matters worse. Plus what happens to any shavings, do they end up in the cylinder? Are there "pros" that do this type of work for a fee? I might move on to my other plugs at this point in parallel to see how many are like this, hopefully this is the only one.

@BareBonesXL, sorry just posted at same time as you did. Will check out that video. Still would also be good to understand difficulty of time-sert approach and any pitfalls.

Yea Makuloco has some good vids. He's using a Cal-Van (Snap-on) kit which is half the price of timesert. Very good vid, but you don't need it. Actually the sert that was used (looks more like a Lisle sert) was the correct size, just a different style and specific for these heads. Didn't you say you could achieve proper torque with the plug that has the insert on it ? If so, all I would do is maybe purchase a quality insert from Cal-Van and MOST iportant, use 266, NOT JB! As JB will crack and fall apart with time. Which is most likley what happened previously. But you want to use the threads you have from the prevouse repair if you can. Otherwise you'll have to go Big-Sert $$$...That 266 is preimo stuff it will lock it in there. Same stuff Time Sert uses. Looks like a cheap and most of all very easy fix.

Btw- for the 266 to do it's job, the threads have to be clean and oil free for the anaerobic sealant/locker to work.

What he shows in his picture has spark plug threads exposed to the combustion chamber. Like half of the thread length. Not directly exposed, but via the gap left between the tapped hole and the plug threads. That can't be right. They'll get carboned up and bind in the insert, which is probably why it came out with the plug. An insert that's the length of the plug threads seems right, doesn't it? Unless that's the wrong spark plug for the head.

The insert in Makuloco's video is longer and covers all of the plug threads.

Yes I was able to torque down the old plug with the helio/whatever was attached to 20 ft lbs. I feel like I'm in over my head here unfortunately.

Are you saying since this cylinder has already be re-threaded by the existing "fix" that the normal size sert product won't work? Conceptually that makes sense, just want to make sure I understand what you are saying.

Seems like my options are:
1) Find a quality insert that is the going to match the threads that was made by the existing insert. Will the Cal-Van 266 just work? (I just searched internet and I must suck at google because I couldn't find the product) I event went to cal van tools website and failed to find it.
2) If that doesn't work I need to step up to the Big-Sert?

Open the video. It's in there. If you're in Chicagoland he'll do it for you, for a price.
