How many miles? Why are you replacing the spider gears? I just changed gears in my truck and replaced the carrier bearings, pinion bearing and axle bearings. Also axle seals and pinion seal. 2.9 quarts of 75w-140 syn. gear oil. That would be a complete rebuild minus gears.

I am replacing them because I have shards of metal coming off of them. I am about to hit 170k miles.

I would replace all bearing. Including the pinion bearing which you will have to pull your pinion gear.

No, I'm having our mechanic do it. I figure if there is other stuff I should replace, I need to do it right.

just have your mechanic do a total rebuild, since t has fairly high mileage. You could also have him inspect ring and pinion for damage, Or excessive wear and tear, and if it's bad replace them also
