Default What is this part for?

Just picked up a 2003 f150 as a farm truck. I was poking around and checking things out when I ran across this...

What is this little electrical do-dad for? I thought it may be an engine light but there is no light involved. My truck is a 2003 with the super cab and FX4 package.

X2. That's a mercury switch. Closes the circuit when hood is up, and opens it when the hood is down. Add that bulb, and it'll operate as it should.

Thank you! I figured it would be a hood light but couldn't see any way of adding a bulb. Just bought this truck used and it seems every bulb that is not legally required for street use has been removed. Very odd... maybe they were hunters or something.

Thanks again,

Not just interior. So far I have added the dome light bulb, both map light bulbs, both cargo light bulbs, third brake light bulb, and now the engine hood light bulb. Both doors have no lens installed and there's a socket for a bulb holder but no wiring. Reading on these forums I see that some trucks would have just a solid red reflector which might be the case or they may be pushed inside the door panel.. Mirror turn signals are also not working but I'll have to figure out how to pull them apart to look but I'm guessing no bulbs there either. I don't see any lighting in the foot wells but don't know if there is supposed to be any there or not. Very weird for a used truck but at least cheap to fix.

Your front doors SHOULD have a 168 or 194 bulb in it. None for the rear doors (if it's a SuperCrew, it has full sized doors, but only a reflector), nor is there anything at your feet. Are you sure your truck has the signal mirror option? You could remove the door panels, and you'll see the connector for the mirror. You'll have to turn your blinkers on, and test with a voltmeter. You'll have to replace the whole mirror assembly (from the door) if it's dead at the mirror itself.

Not sure if it's called a Super Crew or not. I find the doors on the short side for what I would have expected and I have jump seats in the back with what I would call "suicide doors" on both sides of the truck. Pretty sure the mirrors are supposed to have turn signals in them. Both have a narrow vertical strip of red lens outside the view of the driver but easily viewable by a vehicle beside you and they are not reflective at all. The mirror has a colour matched panel on the back that has a little movement in it indicating it is removable. I just don't know whether to pry it open at the bottom, top, or either side to check for bulbs. With 10 year old plastic auto fasteners, if you don't do it right you break stuff and then end up with duct tape on your mirror until you replace it. I can live without them but stuff that doesn't work as intended bugs me in a big way. The engine hood light is now fixed btw... thanks!

Called supercab or extended cab. Super crew has the FULL rear doors not the mini ones.
